Working Principle
- Forward bias (on state)
When the anode voltage is higher than the cathode: the PN junction is turned on and the current flows from the anode to the cathode. The switch is closed, which is equivalent to a low resistance path (the on resistance is usually very small, less than a few ohms). - Reverse bias (off state)
When the cathode voltage is higher than the anode: the PN junction is in the off state and almost no current flows (only a very small leakage current).
Equivalent to an open circuit.
