eSATA is a high-speed external data interface commonly used for external hard drives and storage devices. It supports hot-swapping for ease of use, but frequent plugging and unplugging exposes the interface to electrostatic discharge (ESD). eSATA's theoretical transfer rate can reach 3 Gbps, but actual rates are typically between 1.5 Gbps and 3 Gbps, depending on the limitations of the hard drive and motherboard—nevertheless, its transfer rate is still significantly higher than USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394.
