首页 Technical ESD and Surge Protection Solutions for IP Cameras

ESD and Surge Protection Solutions for IP Cameras

Bella 4 months ago

Overview

An IP camera is a new generation of camera that combines traditional video surveillance with network technology. It can transmit video footage over the internet to the other side of the world, and remote viewers can monitor the images using a standard web browser without the need for any specialized software. A typical IP camera consists of components such as a lens, image and audio sensors, A/D converter, image and audio processors, controller, network server, external alarm, and control interfaces.

Our circuit protection solutions are primarily designed to prevent damage from external electrical threats such as electrostatic discharge, lightning surges, overvoltage, overcurrent, and reverse polarity to ensure devices operate reliably and safely.

Solutions of Interface Protection

1.AC/DC

For interfaces powered by an AC/DC adapter with a 5V output—commonly used in household or indoor IP cameras—the circuit protection design typically needs to address the following common electrical threats:

  • Unstable or faulty adapter output (short-term overvoltage)
  • Lightning-induced surge conducted through the power line
  • Accidental connection to high voltage or reverse polarity by the user
  • Electrostatic discharge

SMBJ series SMBJ5.0A TVS diode is recommended for overvoltage protection:

2.RJ45 Interface

The RJ45 interface is a common communication interface in systems such as network cameras, power equipment, and industrial control, but it is also a high-risk entry point for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and lightning-induced surges. The main risks are as follows:

  • ESD discharge (high voltage spikes generated when touching the RJ45)
  • Common mode surge (such as lightning causing voltage to couple from the common mode between twisted pairs)
  • Differential mode interference (electrical crosstalk during data transmission)

It is recommended to use the SELC03CI low-capacitance TVS diode array for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. This device adopts the SOD-323 standard package and features low leakage current, fast response time (in the nanosecond range), and high reliability. It is widely used for ESD protection in high-speed signal transmission interfaces such as HDMI, USB, and VGA, providing protection for each input/output pin.

Typical Layout and Grounding Recommendations

  • TVS devices should be placed close to the RJ45 connector, with the shortest path to ground.
  • The ESD discharge current path should be routed directly to earth ground or chassis ground.
  • It is not recommended to share a common ground between the TVS and the PHY power ground; ground partitioning should be used for isolation.
  • The shielded housing of the RJ45 connector should be connected to the chassis ground and must not be left floating.

3.USB Interface

USB interface is very susceptible to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge interference due to frequent plugging and unplugging and frequent human contact, especially the high-speed signal lines of USB 2.0/3.x interface are more susceptible. Therefore, the electrostatic protection of USB interface must achieve the following goals:

  • ESD electrostatic protection: voltage released when human body plugs and unplugs, ±8kV~±15kV
  • Transient overvoltage protection: high voltage spikes generated by cable plugging and unplugging
  • EMI suppression: reduce signal crosstalk and maintain signal integrity
  • Maintain signal integrity: cannot affect high-speed signal quality (low capacitance)

It is recommended to use SE41T06U5.0LB electrostatic suppressor, which adopts SOT-143 standard package and has the characteristics of small leakage current, fast response speed (nS level), and high reliability.

4.SD Card Interface

The SD card interface is a common pluggable peripheral interface in embedded devices (such as webcams, handheld terminals, and industrial control equipment). Therefore, it is easily affected by electrostatic discharge during plug-in and pull-out operations.

It is recommended to use the SESRV05-4A electrostatic suppressor, which adopts the SOT-23-6L standard package. The inter-electrode capacitance of the product is as low as 0.4pF, which has little effect on signal transmission.
