Summary
Load dump in automotive electronics refers to the situation where the battery is suddenly disconnected (e.g., due to poor contact or accidental disconnection) while the car generator is charging the battery. This will cause the generator output voltage to rise sharply (up to 80-100V) and last for a long time (tens to hundreds of milliseconds). This is a very critical voltage transient phenomenon that may cause serious damage to system circuits such as the ECU, power supply, and communication bus. When designing and protecting circuits, it is necessary to fully understand its causes, standard waveforms, and protection solutions.
