Summary

PROFIBUS is an open industrial fieldbus managed by the PI organization (compliant with IEC 61158 Type 3 / EN 50170 standards). Utilizing a master-slave polling communication model, it is widely deployed in factory automation and process industries and remains a classic fieldbus with a massive installed base. PROFIBUS-DP relies on an RS-485 differential bus at the physical layer; while the transceiver chips themselves have limited ESD tolerance, the operating environment is highly prone to electrostatic discharge, making this a frequent cause of intermittent node dropouts and latent transceiver damage.
