What is the difference between the transistor and mosfet?

Transistor

Transistor, the full name should be semiconductor triode, also known as bipolar transistor and crystal triode, is a semiconductor device that controls current. Its function is to amplify weak signals into electrical signals with larger amplitudes. It is also used as a contactless switch.

The transistor is one of the semiconductor components, which has the function of current amplification and is the core component of the electronic circuit. The transistor is made of two PN junctions very close to each other on a semiconductor substrate. The two PN junctions divide the entire semiconductor into three parts. The middle part is the base area, and the two sides are the emitter area and the collector area. It can be divided into two types: PNP and NPN.

Field Effect Transistor (FET)

Field Effect Transistor (FET), there are two main types: junction FET (JFET) and metal-oxide semiconductor FET (MOS-FET). The majority of carriers participate in the conduction, also known as unipolar transistors.

It is a voltage-controlled semiconductor device. It has the advantages of high input resistance, low noise, low power consumption, large dynamic range, easy integration, no secondary breakdown, and wide safe working area. It has become a strong competitor of bipolar transistors and power transistors.

Field effect transistor (FET) is a semiconductor device that uses the electric field effect of the control input loop to control the output loop current, and is named after it. Because it only conducts electricity through the majority carriers in the semiconductor, it is also called a unipolar transistor.

Should we choose the mosfet or the transistor?

  • Field effect tubes are voltage control elements, while triodes are current control elements. When only a small amount of current is allowed from the signal source, field effect tubes should be used; when the signal voltage is low and more current is allowed from the signal source, triodes should be used.
  • Field effect tubes use majority carriers to conduct electricity, so they are called unipolar devices, while triodes have both majority carriers and minority carriers to conduct electricity. They are called bipolar devices.
  • The source and drain of some field effect tubes can be used interchangeably, and the gate voltage can be positive or negative, which is more flexible than triodes.
  • Field effect tubes can work under very small current and very low voltage conditions, and its manufacturing process can easily integrate many field effect tubes on a silicon chip, so field effect tubes have been widely used in large-scale integrated circuits.
  • Field effect transistors have advantages such as high input impedance and low noise, so they are also widely used in various electronic devices. In particular, using field effect transistors as the input stage of the entire electronic device can achieve performance that is difficult to achieve with general triodes.
  • Triodes are cheaper and easier to use, often used in digital circuit switch control.
  • The loss of triode is greater than field effect transistor.
  • Field effect transistor is often used for power switch and high current local switch circuit. MOS tube is used for high frequency and high speed circuit, high current occasion, and places that are sensitive to base or drain control current.
