Common Electrostatic Risks and Protection Solutions for Video Intercom Systems

semiware 1 week ago

I. Overview

Video access control systems (such as those featuring facial recognition, touchscreens, or all-in-one units) are susceptible to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) risks during actual operation. Improper design or installation can lead to device malfunctions, communication errors, or even permanent damage to electronic components.

II. Primary Sources of ESD Risks

1、Human Body ESD

  • Walking in dry environments or putting on/taking off clothing can cause a person to accumulate a static charge ranging from several thousand to over ten thousand volts.
  • ESD events occur when a finger touches the access control screen, buttons, or metal frame.

2、Air Discharge

  • High-potential charges can arc across the air gap when a person approaches the device without making direct contact.
  • This commonly occurs near plastic housings or along the edges of display screens.

3、Conduction via Metal Door Structures

  • Access control units are typically mounted on metal door frames.
  • If the door frame is subjected to an ESD event, the static charge can couple into the access control device via the grounding path.

4、Cable Coupling

  • Cables—such as Ethernet, RS485, and power lines—can introduce static electricity into the device.
  • Long cable runs are more prone to picking up induced static charges or surges.

III. Vulnerable Components

  • LCD/OLED displays
  • Capacitive touchscreens
  • Facial recognition cameras
  • MCU/CPU
  • Flash memory
  • Ethernet ports (RJ45)
  • RS485 interfaces
  • Wiegand interfaces
  • USB interfaces
  • Relay control terminals
  • Fingerprint modules
  • NFC/IC card modules

IV. Common ESD Testing Standards

Video access control products generally must comply with the following standard: IEC 61000-4-2 (Electrostatic Discharge Immunity)

  • Contact discharge: ±2 kV, ±4 kV, ±6 kV, ±8 kV
  • Air discharge: ±2 kV, ±4 kV, ±8 kV, ±15 kV

During testing, the device is expected to maintain normal operation; while a brief, temporary degradation in performance may be permissible, the device must recover automatically without sustaining permanent damage or data loss.
